Bipolar disorder is an affective disorder that can cause manic or hypomanic and depressive episodes. These mood swings can last for long periods and affect relationships and everyday life in different ways. Here you can do a screening to see if you have bipolar disorder, but this is not a diagnosis, only an indication based on symptoms. To get a diagnosis, you need to be assessed by a psychiatrist through the health service. The test is based on the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) form used in healthcare and takes about 5 minutes to complete.
What should I do if I have symptoms of bipolar disorder?
If you have signs of bipolar disorder, it is important that you are assessed by a doctor. You can seek help through your health centre or self-refer directly to a specialist psychiatrist. Bipolar disorder is a treatable illness and it is possible to live a good life even if you have been ill before. If you are feeling acutely unwell, contact 112 or emergency psychiatry.
