Migraine is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent headaches and can affect quality of life. Common symptoms include pulsating headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and in some cases, aura symptoms (e.g. visual disturbances or numbness). Migraines differ from regular headaches in their intensity and how they affect everyday life.

Migraines usually start in the teenage years or in the 20s, with attacks occurring several times throughout life. Two of the most common types are migraine without aura and migraine with aura, with migraine without aura being much more common. The headaches can occur in both children and adults and there is often a genetic inheritance. In adults, migraines usually last between 4 hours and 3 days, and in children, headaches usually last no more than 12 hours. Many people with migraine have an average of one attack per month.

If you experience frequent headaches that affect your daily functioning, you may want to reflect on your symptoms. This test is based on common migraine symptoms and can give a first indication of whether your symptoms are similar to migraine. The test is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis, but can be a first step towards understanding your symptoms better. Please answer based on your experience of headaches in the last six months.

What should I do if I have symptoms of migraine?

Diagnosis of migraine is made through a medical evaluation based on symptoms and headache frequency. Treatment may involve keeping a headache diary which can help identify patterns and triggers, along with medical treatment. Lifestyle changes, such as regular sleep, stress management and avoiding triggers, can also help. If the headaches are sudden, extreme or different from before, a doctor should be contacted.
