What is procrastination?

Procrastination is the deliberate postponement of important tasks despite knowing that it may lead to negative consequences. It is a common behaviour that can affect studies, work and everyday commitments. Many people procrastinate occasionally, but when it becomes a pattern, it can lead to stress, guilt and poor performance.

Common causes of procrastination include:

  • Perfectionism – Fear of failure can lead to putting off tasks until you feel completely ready.
  • Impulsivity – Choosing short-term pleasure over long-term goals.
  • Low motivation – When a task feels boring or irrelevant.
  • Poor time management – Difficulty planning and prioritising tasks.

The consequences of chronic procrastination can be both psychological and physical. Stress and anxiety can increase, deadlines can be missed, and self-esteem can be negatively affected. In some cases, procrastination can even lead to more serious problems, such as academic failure or difficulties in the workplace.

This test will help you reflect on your behaviour and determine if you have a tendency to procrastinate. The test is not a substitute for a professional assessment, but can provide a guide to how you see yourself and whether you might benefit from working on procrastination. Tests take around 3 minutes to complete.
