What are relationship problems?
Relationship problems are common in both romantic and other close relationships. They can range from communication difficulties to unresolved conflicts, lack of closeness or repeated feelings of misunderstanding. All relationships go through periods of challenges, but when the problems become long-lasting or negatively affect your daily life, it can be a sign that something needs to change.
Having problems in the relationship does not mean that the relationship cannot change. Difficulties can become an opportunity for development – if both parties are willing to communicate and work on the relationship. However, unresolved problems can lead to frustration, depression and in some cases even affect self-esteem and lead to separation.
Common signs of relationship problems:
- You argue often, or vice versa – avoid conflict altogether.
- You feel lonely even though you are in a relationship.
- Trust has been damaged, for example due to infidelity or betrayal.
- There are difficulties in talking openly about feelings or needs.
- One or both partners feel emotionally distant.
- Closeness, both physical and emotional, has diminished or disappeared.
Relationship problems can also be influenced by external factors such as stress, work, finances, children or illness. Sometimes it is not the relationship itself that is the problem – but the way we deal with our feelings, fears and needs.
By becoming aware of the patterns that arise in the relationship, the chances of being able to influence them increase. This may involve learning to communicate better, setting healthy boundaries or understanding your own attachment style.
This test is not a diagnosis, but it can help you reflect on whether you are experiencing signs of relationship problems, and if so, to what extent. Based on your answers, you can get an idea of whether you might need to initiate change – on your own, with your partner or with the help of professional support.
