What is stress and how does it affect us?

Stress is a natural reaction that helps us cope with everyday challenges and threats. Short-term stress can be positive and give us energy and focus, but when it becomes prolonged and overwhelming, it can negatively affect both our physical and mental health.

Symptoms of prolonged stress can include:

  • Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach problems, palpitations and muscle tension.
  • Emotional symptoms such as worry, irritation, anxiety or depression.
  • Behavioural changes such as sleep problems, decreased motivation and difficulty concentrating.

Stress can have many causes, such as work, relationships, finances or health problems. Understanding your stress level and how it affects you can be a first step towards managing it better. This test will help you identify whether you are under too much stress and whether it might be time to take action to reduce it.

Read each question and choose the answer that best describes your current situation. The scoring at the end of the test will help you understand your stress level. The questions are not a substitute for a professional assessment but can give you a guide on how to manage your stress.

What can I do if I feel stressed?

If the results raise questions and your symptoms affect your functioning in areas such as work and relationships, it is recommended that you seek professional help and treatment. A psychologist or therapist can help you along the way.
